Hello All,
Just a quick letter to let you know how I'm getting on. Hope all is well at home?
Since we returned after the term break we have been very busy, getting up to all sorts. This term I am teaching French to Senior 1 and Senior 2s and English to Senior 1. This is taking up a lot of my time because I give them loads of homework that I correct and tests because they are not used to this. We have also set up a debating team and will go against a local school next week, so we are really excited about that! Last week we brought a group of students to visit the largest university in Uganda and to the National museum. On the way home we stopped of at a beach, they were so excited as very few of them had ever been to the beach before!
The dormitories are also coming along very well. All the money that is not being spent on sports equipment and all the projects we are doing in school and outside, we have put towards the dormitories. They are flying up! They will provide somewhere to stay for the 300 students who are currently sleeping in the science labs. The roof is nearly on now so hopefully they will be finished for the new academic year in January. Outside our secondary school we are painting local primary schools and doing homework club with the street kids in Jinya in our spare time. All your fundraising has made all this possible as you would be surprised how the expenses for all these things add up. It is fantastic to see how much of a difference the money you fundraised can make; I will take loads of pics of the dormitories etc for you all to see.
I only have six weeks left over here and while I'm dying to come home some days, I'll miss the place so much. The people are so great and so much cracks everywhere you go. The students nearly queue up to take lizards and frogs out of our bedroom and they would do anything to give you a help out. I can't think of any crazy stories to tell you about life in Uganda because to be honest it just seems all so normal at this stage. We are well over the culture shock and living the true African life, washing our clothes and getting water from the well. However come Saturday night we gladly hit "2friends" where all the volunteers hang out for a nice dinner and our weekly dose of socialising.
That is all from me, for the moment looking forward to seeing you all when I come home.
